Childhood sexual abuse trauma and compulsive sexual behavior: The experience among adult Puerto Rican men and women
Abstract
Our research addressed the experiences of compulsive sexual behavior (CSC) among Puerto Rican men and women and how they manifested themselves subsequent to the traumatic experience of childhood sexual abuse (CSA). We utilized a qualitative study design with a phenomenological approach and analyzed narratives using Wolcott's (1994) model. The participants were nine informants (two men and seven women) who, from their self-perception, manifested CSC at some point in their lives. We conducted semi-structured interviews and five categories emerged from the narratives, which gave qualitative structure to the findings. The emerging categories were: non-normative sexual debut, calming my demons, compulsive sexual behavior, broken mirror, and dark life. These describe in detail how participants experienced CSC, its intersection with CSA experiences, and the meaning they attached to it. We discuss how these dimensions are linked to post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and to other nosological propositions related to hypersexuality, and address how technology contributes to sustaining these behaviors.
