Resumo

The paper presents an historical overview of the rise of hypnosis during the eighteenth and ninteenth centuries. The principal controversies and characters are highlighted, tanking into consideration the historical ans social context. the factors that contributed to the downfall of hypnosis as a legitimate clinical procedure during the first decades of the twetieth century are also covered, among these, the role played by Freud and the psychoanalytic movement in dismissing hypnosis as of no clinical value. Finally, some of the main trends in hypnosis occuring over the last three decades are discussed, and some examples of recent approaches of various eminent psychologists to hypnosis are outlined.
