Résumé

The purpose of this study was to determine the effectivity of a psychoeducational program of family intervention in the reduction of readmission rates to psychiatric care both at the impatient and outpatient level. The sample consisted of twelve patients and families of the Psychiatric Hospital of Río Piedras, Puerto Rico. Analysis of variance with the scores obtained in the anxiety, hostility and depression scales of the Multiple Affectuve Adjective Check List (MAACL) were performed. It was found that relatives of the female patients in the experimental group scored higher in the hostility scale of the MAACL. The results showed a significant reduction in the rate of readmission to the hospital of the experimental group during the first three months. Yet there was no significant difference between the experimental group and the control group after six months.
